Learning at Stivichall is a passport for life

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, Economic) Education

At Stivichall, we follow the Jigsaw Scheme of Work to teach PSHE. Jigsaw PSHE adopts a mindful approach to learning, with a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.

Jigsaw PSHE supports the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:

  • Have a sense of purpose

  • Value self and others

  • Form relationships

  • Make and act on informed decisions

  • Communicate effectively

  • Work with others

  • Respond to challenge

  • Be an active partner in their own learning

  • Be active citizens within the local community

  • Explore issues related to living in a democratic society

  • Become healthy and fulfilled individuals

Children have weekly Jigsaw lessons and the half termly Themes are launched, then reinforced in assemblies.

Jigsaw is delivered through a whole school approach, with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level), building sequentially through the school year. Children are able to build on their understanding of the themes as they move through the school, enabling them to deepen their understanding each time they revisit a theme. In addition to meeting the National Curriculum requirements, Jigsaw is relevant to children living in today’s world as it helps them understand and be equipped to cope with issues like body image, cyber and homophobic bullying, and internet safety.

We supplement the PSHE curriculum with lessons linked to

  • Anti-bullying (see Behaviour and Discipline Policy)

  • Online safety

  • RSE (see RSE policy and information below)

  • Philosophy for Children (P4C)

  • We All Belong

  • Protective Behaviours – We deliver the Taking Care Project lessons to all children in the Autumn term and revisit this throughout the year.
